SAES explains the conclusions and results deal with their participation in the European program CLOSEYE. SAES has developed a system based on sonar technology in order to detect the small boats typically used on illegal activities.

SAES has offered a conference entitle “Design and Operational Tests of a Lineal Sonar performed for the detection of illegal boats in Mediterranean shallow waters” during the IV the 4th National Conference on R&D in Defence and Security. The conference focus on the conclusions that SAES has obtained throught their participation in CLOSEYE, an European program lead to the validation of innovative technologies applicable to the surveillance of the EU Maritime Borders.

The program which is in the final development stage is supported by the 7th European Framework Programme and it has been developed in collaboration with important companies. SAES participation is based on the deployment of a linear antenna passive sonar and digital technology as a way for the detection, tracking and identification of illegal activities as drugs traffic or irregular migration. This issue has capital importance for the European Union, specifically to have tested surveillance solutions to be able to face the upcoming security threats and risks. This fact was one of the chances that allow the SAES solution was included at the program.

Besides the sonar deployment, SAES has face to other technological challenges such as: the automatization of the detection system, the tracking and classification, the satellite communication and the development of an effective system to characterized the boats and the data recording in a classification database. Summarizing, SAES has developed and validated a system fully customized for the surveillance tasks.

Currently SAES is working in two lines: the improvement of the antenna detection features and in a more completed classification database.

The 4th National Conference on R&D in Defence and Security is helding at the Spanish Air Force Academy in San Javier (Murcia) on 16th, 17th, and 18th November 2016 is  a forum and a meeting point for all the agents related to R&D within the field of Defence and Security: Universities, University Centers of Defence, the University Center for the Spanish Guardia Civil, public research institutions, companies, laboratories, etc. Besides SAES other companies such as Navantia, ISDEFE, EXPAL and INDRA have been participated.

The conference promotes the presentation and dissemination of current research and development in the civilian context with results and innovative methodologies that are potentially applicable to national Defence and Security, resulting in the known as dual-use technologies.
