On 13 May 2025, SAES announced its forthcoming Centre of Excellence in Subaquatic Technologies, CETSUB, at the International Defence and Security Exhibition (Feindef), held from 12 to 14 May in Madrid. This pioneering centre aims to position Spain as a leading force in marine safety and environmental protection through the development of advanced technologies.
The mission of CETSUB is to advance technological capabilities in underwater acoustics, artificial intelligence, and unmanned vehicles, while also promoting collaborations with universities and technology entities to foster an innovation ecosystem. Sara García Ruiz, SAES’s Director of Innovation, stated, “This centre is crucial for delivering integrated and advanced solutions in the subaquatic realm, enhancing marine protection with environmentally friendly technologies.”
During “SAES Day” at Feindef on 13 May, Javier Mármol Peñalver, President of SAES, remarked, “Synergies with strategic partners like Navantia and our goals to attract talent and promote sustainability enable us to lead innovation in subaquatic technologies.”
CETSUB is set to become a driver of research and collaboration, aligning its efforts with the Defence Industrial Strategy to tackle emerging threats and enhance defence and security in the underwater domain. Its areas of expertise include subaquatic communications, advanced sensing in unmanned vehicles, and the application of artificial intelligence for underwater object detection and classification. These technologies will be applied not only in defence but also in other sectors such as aquaculture and offshore wind energy.
Elena Carrasco, the coordinator of the Navantia COEX network (Navantia’s Centres of Excellence network), states, “We view this centre as a comprehensive extension of our innovation network. We will continue to drive and collaborate closely, as we have done for years. These centres are crucial for channelling innovation at Navantia; without our partners, we could not progress. It is essential for the entire industry to work together.”
Cristina Abad, director of Navantia Sistemas, notes, “At Navantia Sistemas, as recipients of SAES technology and integrators of that technology into Navantia’s ship combat systems, we are immensely proud. The creation of this SAES Centre of Excellence is a significant, positive step, as it will help develop these technologies to meet the current needs of ships, addressing the industry’s and defence’s present challenges.”
The centre will also focus on attracting and nurturing the next generation of leaders in subaquatic technology, creating an appealing work environment that fosters continuous development. These initiatives will allow SAES to not only address current challenges but also anticipate future needs, establishing itself as an international reference in this field. Collaboration with entities such as the Spanish Navy and the Ministry of the Interior reinforces its focus on protection and security while supporting the growth of the blue economy.
