The technology company SAES, in collaboration with Satlink, has launched Ocean Sentinel, an innovative underwater surveillance system, during the ‘SAES Day’ at the national defence exhibition, Feindef, held in Madrid from 12th to 14th May. This unique system is specifically designed to enhance Maritime Safety and Defence, offering an advanced, cost-effective approach to threat detection in the naval environment.
Ocean Sentinel marks a significant advancement in surveillance systems by incorporating state-of-the-art acoustic technology. Designed to operate autonomously, the system consists of smart buoys deployed at sea, supported by a remote-control centre that receives and analyses early alerts. Each buoy is equipped with hydrophones, devices functioning like underwater microphones capable of capturing sounds in the marine environment. Additionally, it employs edge computing, a data processing methodology that takes place near the data source. This approach eliminates dependence on a centralised location and enables faster response times. With this technology, the system can be configured remotely to adjust its detection capabilities according to the specific underwater threats being monitored. The system delivers a high level of operational efficiency without significant associated costs.
Ocean Sentinel is set to be operated during NATO exercises REPMUS 2025 in Portugal, where SAES will work closely with its main client, the Navy. This collaboration has not only allowed the definition of use cases for the defence sector but will also provide operational validation of the system in real-world scenarios. According to Javier Mármol, President of SAES, “With Ocean Sentinel, we are offering the Civil Guard effective solutions for civilian protection, such as early identification of small boats from a great distance offshore, preventing loss of life, and the ability to monitor the presence of drug-trafficking boats.” Faustino Velasco, President of Satlink, added, “This technology represents a milestone in underwater surveillance. Thanks to its intelligent design and operational autonomy, Ocean Sentinel offers effective solutions not only for defence but also opens up new possibilities for protecting critical infrastructure and supporting civilian missions with maximum efficiency and reliability.”
Furthermore, Ocean Sentinel integrates seamlessly with SAES’s Diver Detection Sonar (DDS), providing an additional layer of security for critical infrastructure such as ports. Although Ocean Sentinel is technologically advanced in its development, its design allows for easy use, enabling clients to monitor early alerts without requiring specialised knowledge in acoustics. This feature highlights the user-friendliness and adaptability of Ocean Sentinel, setting a new standard in maritime security.
