Early detection of leaks in critical hydraulic infrastructures, such as dams or water tanks, is essential to prevent severe damage and to optimise maintenance. This paper reports experimental results obtained with fibre Bragg grating (FBG) optical hydrophones for the acoustic detection of water-leak signals. The methodology combined in situ measurements in a tank with an actual leak, aimed at characterising the associated acoustic signature, and controlled laboratory tests where several FBG prototypes were compared against a conventional reference hydrophone. The results showed that the leak produced extremely low-amplitude signals, barely distinguishable from the background noise, which represents a significant detection challenge. After the preliminary evaluation of several FBG prototypes, the most balanced configuration was selected for subsequent tests, although its sensitivity was considered insufficient for reliable detection of the real leak. This work, funded by the Instituto de Fomento de la Región de Murcia (INFO) within the framework of the Region of Murcia’s CAETRA programme, was presented in October 2026 at the Tecniacústica conference in Granada.
