SAES at MARELEC 2015

SAES will present in the MARELEC 2015 Conference a technical article about electric and magnetic fields emitted by cruise ships

The acoustics and non-acoustic underwater radiations have proved effects on the marine life. In order to try to mitigate these effects, the European Union (EU) has promulgated the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), aimed to achieve the Good Environmental Status (GES) of the EU’s marine water by 2020.

In this field, SAES (S.A. Electrónica Submarina) is developing a series of studies on the radiation generated by vessels, and specifically their magnetic and electric emissions, since their impact is much less known than this produced by acoustic radiations. As a first step, SAES has centered their analysis on cruise ships. The company is processing the data collected by the SAES’ manufactured Multi-Influence Range System (MIRS), in order to determine the emissions levels and their possible impact on the marine fauna and flora in the measurement area, taking as a reference the guidelines of the MSFD.

Marelec15_VisitUs_Logo_150x210pxThe results from these studies will be explained in depth at MARELEC 2015 by means of the presentation entitled:

“Stand out characteristics of electric and magnetic fields emitted by cruise ships in the Mediterranean Sea” by Francisco Javier Rodrigo Saura, DSP Group Head & Antonio Sánchez García, R&D&i Manager, SAES, on Tuesday June 16, 3:05pm.

SAES experts will explain as the analysis of the measured values show that magnetic and electric field levels increase significantly due to the cruise ships presence in the measurement area, and as the detected levels clearly make recommendable to perform further specific studies to determine possible influences on the marine fauna and propose specific actions to regulate the electromagnetic radiated fields if necessary.

MIRS – Multi-influence Range System for surface ships and submarines

Firmas SubmarinasThe SAES Multi Influence Range System (MIRS) for surface vessels and submarines provides real influence measures (magnetic, electric, pressure, acoustic, and seismic) in a real and controlled scenario, to successfully counter related threats.

MIRS is among the best systems in the world in its class and compared to fixed stations. A decisive advantage of the MIRS system is that, due to its portability, low weight, low power consumption and high performance, can obtain all signatures of the ship in different geographical locations.

MIRS is also a tool for testing and calibration of:

  • Systems developed to reduce those influences as degaussing systems, ASG, etc.
  • Systems developed for MCM as the mine sweeping systems.

MIRS has been primarily designed using Commercial Off The Self (COTS) components for maximum reliability at minimum cost.
